Course Description

This BYTSYZ online course is designed for individuals who work with children and young people. It explores the issues surrounding the safeguarding of children and young people by exploring the concepts of 'child vulnerability', 'child protection' and 'significant harm'; coupled with practitioner and organisational responsibilities of ensuring wellbeing and protecting children from abuse.

Building on these concepts child abuse is explored through defining the term and exploring the four main forms of abuse, namely: physical abuse; emotional abuse; sexual abuse and neglect. In addition the problem of bullying is investigated. The course will enable students recognise the signs of child abuse by focusing on examples as well as the behavioural and physical indicators.

The legislation that underpins child protection is explored, including the child protection orders covered by UK legislation. In England, the core legislation is The Children Acts (1989) and (2004), which provides the framework within which organisations must operate in terms of their policies, procedures and protocols. It also explores the relevant guidance on inter-agency collaboration with an emphasis on 'Working Together to Safeguard Children (2015)'. There is detail about the work of the Disclosure and Barring Service, created by The Protection of Freedoms Act (2012)'. The course also explores the variances in legislation and guidance across all other parts of the United Kingdom.

A practical approach is taken to define the responsibility of organisations and individuals in relation to handling a disclosure and recording/reporting the abuse of children and young people. Practical examples are included to help practitioners handle and manage the difficult situation of disclosure with encouragement to develop personal check-lists for these situations.

Awareness is raised of the post-referral processes, including:

  • strategy meetings
  • investigations
  • child protection conferences
  • paediatric assessments
  • interviews.

There is a detailed exploration of multi-agency working and collaboration to ensure the wellbeing of children. The main agencies involved in a multi-agency approach are examined as is their methods of working.

By the end of the study, through exploring real-life scenarios, individuals will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding to:

  • work within the legislation and guideline requirements associated with the safeguarding of children and young people
  • recognise the signs and symptoms of child vulnerability and abuse
  • know what to do when this is identified
  • manage a child disclosure
  • ensure safe practice
  • operate using a multi-agency approach.

The content of this online course is relevant to practitioners in all parts of the United Kingdom as it covers the differences in legislation, guidance and approaches to assessment.

I found the course very informative. I enjoyed the exercises given on certain pages. I would have liked more exercises as this made me think more about the contents that I was studying.
Being an online course it was handy that I could access it from my I-pad at any time, and study as much or as little in one session as time permitted. I definitely recommend doing the trial assessments several times before doing the final assessment, as this helped me with my confidence before completing the final assessment. Overall I found the course very interesting and would recommend this course to my colleagues.
