Pressure ulcers can affect people of all ages, shapes and sizes. The aim of this course is to protect those vulnerable people from the dangers of pressure ulcer development or, if they already have one, to provide the best quality care and treatment available.
Pressure ulceration represents a major burden of sickness and reduced quality of life for sufferers and their carers alike. As the population grows older the at-risk group grows. Notwithstanding, the majority of pressure ulcers are preventable.
According to the Tissue Viability Society: 'Tissue viability is a growing speciality that primarily considers all aspects of skin and soft tissue wounds including acute surgical wounds, pressure ulcers and all forms of leg ulceration'.
Pressure ulcers are one important strand of tissue viability. A pressure ulcer is a breakdown of the skin and underlying tissue, caused when the area of skin is placed under pressure. They are sometimes known as 'bedsores' or 'pressure sores' and 'decubitus ulcers'.
