Course Description

This course gives a broad introduction to health and safety for those who deliver care or support others in their own home.

Course unit explores the introductory requirements for health and safety in care, focussing specifically on:

  • health and safety principles and legislation
  • fire safety
  • controlling the spread of infection
  • principles of first aid
  • requirements for the safe administration of medicines and related procedures
  • moving and handling
  • workplace safety and security.

Due to the experience and previous knowledge of the individual completing the course BYTSYZ has built in explanations of all new and technical terms that the student may be facing for the first time.

To further embed this new and often complex learning BYTSYZ has included a number of care related exercises to encourage:

  • Liaison with managers and senior carers to engage with issues at the local level, such as the content and location of local policies and procedures
  • The contextualisation of learning
  • Consolidation of learning.

  8. Identify the Principles of first aid in relation to emergency situations
  9. Identify the importance of procedures relating to medicine administration
  10. Know what to do in practical situations to do with medicine administration
  11. Know the theory related to safe moving and handling
  12. Identify the principles for safe practice when moving and handling
  13. Know how to ensure a safe working environment
  14. Identify ways to ensure personal safety and well-being whilst at work
