Description
This BYTSYZ online course will enable students to understand the general and specific health and safety requirements of working in a health or social care environment. The qualification focuses specifically on a number of key areas as highlighted below.
Health & Safety:

- Personal and employer responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of service users

The course addresses all the theoretical elements of these health and safety issues, but does not attempt, for obvious reasons to cover the detailed practical aspects, particularly in relation to manual handling. While practical tips are provided throughout the programme they are there to help raise awareness and to promote greater understanding thus promoting safer practice amongst workers.
Course Objectives
- Explain the legal and operational aspects of the health and Safety at Work Act 1974 with reference to its application in the workplace
- Identify the practical issues that need to be addressed if health and safety in the workplace is to be maintained
- Explain how fire starts and spreads
- Identify effective ways of controlling fire and ensuring safe evacuation
- Identify the main risks relating to the spread of infection
- Explain effective measures to minimise and control the spread of infection
- Explain the requirements for manual handling as defined in the 1992 Regulations
- Identify practical ways to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling operations
