This course is designed specifically for individuals who are assisting in the management of individuals with diabetes (e.g. care workers, managers of care homes, health and social care support workers, it can be suitable for registered nurses as part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)).

Course Description

This course is designed specifically for care workers who are assisting in the management of individuals with diabetes. It will enhance knowledge and understanding in the field of diabetes in relation to:

  • Physiology of diabetes
  • Signs and causes of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
  • Differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
  • Symptoms and diagnosis of diabetes
  • Range of treatments
  • Monitoring of the diabetic condition
  • Recognising and responding to diabetic emergencies
  • Understanding the major complications of uncontrolled diabetes
  • Healthy lifestyle management

The course provides an introductory overview of diabetes care. It focuses on the person with diabetes and how they can make informed choices in relation to treatment and lifestyle. You will study physiological, physical, psychological and educational aspects of the condition of diabetes, and learn about its diagnosis, complications, treatment and lifestyle changes.

The course will appeal to individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including people with diabetes, health care workers and anyone interested in learning more about the condition.

To further embed this new and often complex learning BYTSYZ has included a number of care related exercises to encourage:

  • Liaison with managers and senior carers to engage with issues at the local level, such as the content and location of local policies and procedures
  • The contextualisation of learning
  • Consolidation of learning

Course Objectives

  1. Explain the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas and role of insulin in the regulation of blood sugar
  2. Explain the types of diabetes and the signs and causes of Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar)
  3. Explain the causes of Type 1 diabetes and the factors that can predispose to Type 2 diabetes
  4. Identify the signs and symptoms of diabetes and how it is diagnosed
  5. Explain the range of diabetic treatments and the importance of safe insulin injection
  6. Explain the importance of monitoring diabetes and the role of diet controlling its progression
  7. Explain the emergency response to hypoglycaemia
  8. Explain the emergency response to ketoacidosis
  9. Explain the range of risk factors and major complications associated with diabetes
  10. Explain the importance of a lifestyle to promote the health of a diabetic sufferer
