Course Description

This BYTSYZ online course is the perfect refresher course for staff who are designated to administer medicines. It is good practice for all staff who have responsibility for the control, handling and administration of medicines to be updated annually. The course provides all the knowledge update requirements for individuals on the safe control, handling and administration of medicines in social and domiciliary care environments.

The course meets the requirements for and covers in its entirety the Learning Outcomes of the "Knowledge Set for Medication", as defined by Skills for Care and Development in 2005, namely:

  • Legislation and medication
  • Roles, responsibilities and boundaries
  • Types of medicine and routes
  • Safe practice in the administration of medicines

Additionally the course meets the knowledge requirements as defined by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for recognising an individual at Level 2 "Designated Status" for the administration of medicines in social or domiciliary care settings; as such it is excellent professional updating for such staff.

In addition the course examines the concept of risk assessment and how this is used to determine the ability of a service user to safely self-administer their own medication. The legislation surrounding the control of medicines is examined and the impact it has on practice examined.

We explore the issues relating to the taking of medicines such as:

  • Types of medicines
  • Routes of administration
  • Side effects
  • Contra-indications
  • Allergies

There is of course a detailed look at the issues surrounding the safe administration of medicines using both MDS and non-MDS methods.

The course is fully assessed by a timed multiple-choice test, which validates the learning that has taken place. This enables confidence for managers and regulators that real learning has resulted from the study, which will enhance safe practice.

JULIE from Exeter (26-04-2015)
This is an excellent Control and Administration of Medicines Refresher Level 3 online course but has also provided knowledge about medicines that I never knew. I found it very logical and systematic in its approach. I would advise any nurse to consider undertaking this course who has been qualified for a period of perhaps more than 3 years.

MANDY from Littleborough (03-03-2015)
I have just completed medication level 3, this course was very helpful and very informative.
