Course Description

This BYTSYZ online course provides all the knowledge requirements for the safe control, handling and administration of medicines in social and domiciliary care environments.

The course meets the requirements for and covers in its entirety the Learning Outcomes of the "Knowledge Set for Medication", as defined by Skills for Care and Development in 2005. Additionally it meets the knowledge requirements as defined by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) for recognising an individual at Level 2 "Designated Status" for the administration of medicines in social or domiciliary care settings.

Following successful completion, individuals must be observed by a designated person to competently administer a range of medicines. BytSyz provides registered students with a downloadable proforma for this purpose.

Following successful completion of the theoretical and practical components, a manager may recognise an individual as a person designated for the administration of medicines.

The course title refers to the "control" of medicines, which relates to safe:

• Prescribing
• Dispensing
• Collection/receipt
• Recording of administration or refusal
• Management of errors
• Storage
• Audit
• Disposal of medicines

In addition the course examines the concept of risk assessment and how this is used to determine the ability of a service user to safely self-administer their own medication.

The legislation surrounding the control of medicines is explored and the impact it has on practice examined.

We explore the issues relating to the taking of medicines such as:

• Types of medicines
• Routes of administration
• Side effects
• Contra-indications
• Allergies

There is of course a detailed look at the issues surrounding the safe administration of medicines using both MDS and non-MDS methods.

The course is suitable for managers and senior care workers, to enable them to supervise or undertake the administration of medicines in accordance with current legislation. The course is fully assessed by a timed multiple-choice test, which validates the learning that has taken place. This enables confidence for managers and regulators that real learning has resulted from the study, which will enhance safe practice.

Course Objectives

1. Describe the key legislation and guidance relating to the safe handling of medicines
2. Identify how organisational policies and procedures ensure the safe handling of medicines
3. For a range of care settings and both medical and non-medical care staff, outline the process for the prescribing, dispensing, obtaining and checking of medicines
4. Outline the range of support and guidance available relating to medicines and explain the importance of confidentiality relating to disclosure about individuals' medication
5. Identify the types, purpose and classification of medicines commonly administered
6. Explain the routes by which medicines may be administered, the related rules for administration and level of competence required
7. Outline the importance of checking for, recognising and reporting effects that can occur as a result of an adverse reaction, a contraindication or an interaction between medicines
8. Explain the need to gain consent and undertake risk assessment prior to the self or secondary administration of medicines
9. Describe the importance of the preparation for and administration of medicines to ensure accuracy
10. Identify the importance of accurate recording for the administration and refusal of medicines and administration errors
11. Recognise the requirements to validate the accuracy of safe storage and recording for medicines and for their safe disposal
