This BYTSYZ online course is suitable for

All individuals new to working in the social care environment and who are required to meet the Skills for Care Common Induction Standards (CIS) within the first twelve weeks of commencing work.

Course Description

This BYTSYZ online course is designed to meet the Main Areas of the CIS relating to the delivery of care and support to service users. This online course covers:

• Main Area 1.2 of Standard 1 (Confidentiality)
• Standard 4 (Communicate effectively)

The course explores:

• The reasons for communication
• How we communicate
• The communication process
• Reasons for and how to maintain confidentiality
• Barriers to communication and how to overcome them
• Use of touch in communication
• Purpose of and maintaining accurate records

The online courses is designed solely to meet the needs of the CIS and is not suitable for experienced care workers wishing to extend their knowledge in this area of practice.

Due to the experience and previous knowledge of the individual completing the course BYTSYZ has built in explanations of all new and technical terms that the student may be facing for the first time.

To further embed this new and often complex learning BYTSYZ has included a number of care related exercises to encourage:

• Liaison with managers and senior carers to engage with issues at the local level, such as the content and location of local policies and procedures
• The contextualisation of learning
• Consolidation of learning

Course Objectives

1. Define communication in terms of rationale, method and process
2. Explain the importance of confidentiality, with specific reference to data protection and the freedom of information
3. Identify the barriers to effective communication
4. Explain how barriers can be overcome through the use of effective communication
5. Know the types and forms of records used in the workplace, the importance of recording accurate information and the rules in relation to accessing such records
6. Explain the role of the care worker in effective record keeping and identify their appropriate use
