Effective Reading
Reading plays an important part in studying a BYTSYZ Qualification. Below are a number of key strategies to help you focus your reading.
Before Starting your Reading
- Think about your reasons for reading. As reading is such an important part you should see reading as key, because:
- It is about your subject, or it is related to your subject
- Gives information to enable you to understand
- Will enable learning to take place
- Provides preparation for your final assessment
- Think about what you already know about the subject
- Make a note of words or phrases connected with the topic that you may find in the text.
Reading
- Survey the text - scan the text briefly to get a flavor for the content
- Identify your purpose for reading
- If you are looking for specific information, read the part where you think it will be
- If you want a general idea of the whole text, read the whole text
- In both cases ignore words or sections you don't immediately understand
- You should now have a general idea of what the text is about
- Do a second more careful reading, noting any new words that are important for your understanding
- Put all the ideas together in your mind.
Vocabulary
- When reading, words that are new to you are very important. It is essential that you find out what the word means to enable a clear understanding of the subject
- You may need to look a word up in a dictionary
- Make sure you memorise the meaning of the new word
- To enable you to remember the new word use it in conversation a few times, this will ensure that you remember the word for future occasion.
After reading
- Make a list of the new words which you think will be useful for you in the future. Give:
- Definitions of the words
- Indication of whether they are nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.
- Phrases in which the word occurs
- Other words with the same meaning
- Other forms of the words.
Evaluate what you have read
- How does it fit into what you already think and know?
- Does it confirm your ideas; add to them, conflict with them?
- If there are opinions, do you agree or disagree with them?
