Course Description

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommends that all practitioners working within care establishments who administer medication, should have sound knowledge, which in turn supports safe practice.

This online course, provides all the knowledge requirements for the safe control, safe handling and administration of medicines in health, social and domiciliary care environments. It examines, in detail, the knowledge and understanding required by any practitioner seeking to gain 'designated' status for the administration of medicines within a care establishment or environment.

The course meets the knowledge requirements for medicine administration:

  • covered by Regulation 12 as defined in the the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations governing care delivery, updated version (2014). In relation to the administration of medicines, 'Regulation 12 – Safe Care and Treatment', states that every care establishment must provide care and treatment in a safe way for those receiving care. In relation to the administration of medicines, this regulation sets out what care establishments and practitioners must do, which includes: the use of risk assessment; ensuring those administering medicines have the appropriate knowledge and competence; the need for appropriate safe management of medicines and the prevention of the spread of infection through medicine administration.
  • identified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as 'level 2 administration of medicines, standard training' and 'level 3 – administration of medicines using specialised techniques'

This course consists of four modules:

Module 1

Explores the legal classification of medicines as well as other related legislation and regulatory requirements. The module also explores the importance of local policies and procedures and their role in ensuring medicine administration standards are maintained.

Module 2

Examines the main groups of medicines in use to treat symptoms and conditions. For each group of medicines we explore how they work and identify some common examples that are in use today. This module also explores the main routes for medicine administration as well as the range of medicine reactions and contraindications.

Module 3

Focuses on best and safe practice for the administration of medicines. It explores the importance of risk assessment in determining the safety of administration. The module explores, in detail, safe methods for administering and recording the administration of medicines.

Module 4

Considers the purpose of audit in managing and controlling medicines in care establishments. The module also examines what actions to take in the event of medicine administration errors, as well as actions that can be taken to prevent errors occurring.
